Your New Life

Starting life as a Christian is exciting. We encourage you to find a bible-believing church and plug in. The same way a new born baby needs milk to grow, you also need the word of God to grow. Be patient with yourself in this new life. You are a work in progress; God is not finished with any of us yet.

How to Study the Bible:

The Bible is not like any other book that we read. We should not just read the bible, we must meditate on the scriptures in it trusting God for spiritual insight. This is important because we are instructed in the Bible to study to show ourselves good workmen that rightly divide the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

Practical Tips on How to Study Your Bible

Jesus also says in Luke 6:47-48 that, “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock."

Below are five things we can do as believers to help us in our study of God's Word. When you pull aside to study the Word, have your pen and journal handy for the time of study is also one of God's time to speak to you through the Holy Spirit. Listen to Him:

  1. Read and pray the scriptures in Ephesians 1:17-20 and Colossians 1:9-14 and put your name in those scriptures. Trust that the Holy Spirit will give you insight beyond your intellect.

  1. Underline or highlight key words or phrases in the Bible passage. Use a pen and make note of new insights in the margin. This will help you to look back from time to time to remind yourself of what God is teaching you.

  1. Put the scriptures you are studying into your own words and read them over.

  1. Ask and answer some questions. Questions will help you dig deep into the scripture you are studying and it will unlock new meanings. Ask questions about the passage of scripture using these words: who, what, why, when, where, or how. Jot down your thoughts on how you would answer these questions.

5.Capture the big idea. God’s Word communicates big ideas. Periodically ask, What’s the big idea in this sentence, paragraph, or chapter?

  1. Personalize the meaning. When God speaks to us through the Scriptures, we must respond. We do this by making the scripture we are studying personal i.e. apply it to your life. For example, ask: How could my life be different today as I respond to what I’m reading?
